Airline Policies on Special Items

For travelers who want to pack special items in their baggage, you should know that some airlines impose restriction regarding these things. In order to avoid any inconvenience, here are some useful guidelines that the Transportation Security Administration follows.

  1. Alcoholic Beverage – travelers can bring alcoholic drinks with less than 70% alcohol content. Each person is allowed to bring as much as 5 liters of alcoholic drink as long as it is checked in and contained in a spill-free flask or bottle.
  2. Knives and Other Tools – you can bring these items with you as long as they are in your baggage for check in. Make sure that they are wrapped securely and that the sharp edges are not exposed in order to protect the security officers and luggage handlers.
  3. Crematory Containers – this special item can be placed in your carry-on as long as it has passed an x-ray inspection. Keep in mind that the container must be made of a material such as plastic or wood that will allow clear viewing of the content under the x-ray machine. If not, it will not be allowed through. You are allowed to put it in your checked in luggage only after successfully passing screening tests for explosive substances.
  4. Valuable Items – in case you are carrying large amounts of jewelry, coins or other precious items, you should request the officer in charge of security to screen your items in private to avoid attracting attention from the wrong people.
  5. Musical Instrument – you may choose to bring your instrument as checked baggage or carry-on depending on its size and airline policies. Make sure that your musical instruments are packed securely. You should also expect them to be screened and checked under the x-ray machine.
