Coping with Fear of Flying

Traveling by air for the very first time can be quite daunting. Most people will feel a sense of losing control for being confined in a small space, suspended 30,000 feet in air and subjected to turbulence. If you are a first time flier, all these things will certainly leave you afraid.

Fear of Flying?

The trick to coping with aviphobia or fear of flying is proper planning. For starters, you should know that, based on statistics, air travel is considerably safer than other modes of transport. The FAA is also quite strict when it comes to safety regulations and there are effective systems in place that will protect you in cases of emergencies. Knowing these should be enough to calm your nerves.

Talking it over with the airline crew will also relieve you some of the fear. They will provide you assistance to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the flight. Never be afraid to ask questions and for help, if necessary especially if you are really becoming agitated. Although there are surly airline crews, most of them are quite helpful and understanding of people who are afraid to fly.

Try to relax and remain calm by doing breathing exercises and avoid consuming any caffeinated beverages before the flight. Bring a book or an mp3 player, which will help you stay distracted. You can also do some stretching to release the tension in your muscles. Some passengers even bring their own pillows or blanket to make them feel more comfortable and safe.

One last option is to ask for medical advice. A doctor could prescribe you some medication that could help alleviate your anxiety. If you like, you can even enroll in classes that will help you manage your fear of flying.

Coping with your fear of flying is quite easy and before you know it, you are flying to different destinations located all over the world.
