Travel Tips for the Disabled
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008There are several reasons why you should travel and see the world. In addition to the beautiful sights and sounds, you will also love the different culture and traditions. But if you are hesitant because of your disability, it is only understandable. After all, traveling with a physical disability can be quite exhausting.
It does not matter whether you are the one with the disability or you are traveling with someone who is, the important matter is you are aware of some of the things that could make your trip a lot less stressful. Consider the following travel tips:
- Be prepared by planning ahead. It is probably wise for you to check if the airline and hotel offers amenities for the disabled such as wheelchairs, ramps and accessible rooms. Also, you should ask the airline and hotel if they provide special assistance in order to make your trip more comfortable.
- Learn about your travel destination. Since some places offer limited accessibility, it would be less inconvenient for you if you do a little research about the attractions you will be checking out. In addition, you should also check available modes of transportation and whether they can accommodate wheelchairs.
- Pack properly. If you are taking certain medications for your health condition, you should make sure that you put them in your carry on bag in case your checked luggages are lost in transit. Remember to bring spare prescription just to be on the safe side. It would also be smart if you get a health insurance to cover emergency medical costs.
During your trip, you should not be embarrassed to ask for assistance because of your physical disability. Most people would not mind helping out as long as you politely make the request.
If you are not satisfied with the special assistance or amenities, you can always ask for another seat, room or even change hotels.
